I have had good luck with a half mask toxic dust respirator that I got at
the Woodcraft store for abouty $35. It fits nicely over my nose and mouth and
doesn't fog my glasses like the one I used to use. According to the box, it
meets OSHA and NIOSH requirements for toxic dust and particles. See item 141621
in the Woodcraft catalog.
I use it in conjunction with a table top dust collector I built based on
plans in the Fall, 2001 issue of Woodcarving Illustrated (Issue no. 16,
page 63). It is powered by three computer fans; I used the older style fans which
are about 4 inches square. The fans pull the air through a 6 inch by 16 inch
Purolator air filter that I got in the auto section at Walmart backed up by an
inch thick Varathane sanding pad and a conventional window air conditioner
filter. The whole unit is about 20 inches wide, 7 inches deep and 6 inches high.
The filters are easily removed so I can periodically take them out and whack
them against a tree to remove the collected dust. The collector plugs into the
same power board as my rotary tools so when ever I flip on the switch to
power carve the dust collector starts up. I was able to scrounge the fans free
from a computer repairer so the whole setup cost me only about $25 or $30.
