[Woodcarver] Laminates

Hi Bonnie,
I guessing the 3-foot wide door to have a 2-foot wide insert. This is
normally what they are because the stiles and rails are about 6-inches wide.
The 2-foot wide panel in Cherry will need to allow for a total of 3/8-inch
movement (3/16-inch per side). Alder perhaps a little less movement.
I would first have the panel mounted in the door so the framework of the
door will prevent it from bowing. Always carve from the heart side of the
board for minimum bowing. Try to go no more than half way through the board
for minimum bowing and maximum strength. Also what Bill says about the
camber is helpful because it compensates for any bow that takes place.

Wonder if anyone has information on Alder or Cherry laminates.
I'm doing a deep relief carving on a 3' x 6'10" door. The top half of the
door is to be carved as an insert. The depth will be 1 1/2". I will carve
four levels at 1/4" each, leaving a 1/2" uncarved. Is this sufficient to
prevent warping/cracking? When they join two 12" wide boards together, is
the process called lamination, or should I be asking for something else at
my local woodworking shop?
