[Woodcarver] Laminates

Hi Bonnie,

If I were building the rest of the door than I would build the panels.
However I haven't built anything in years because I do much better spending
my time carving. I contract out all my building from professionals.

The best, most stable wood is quarter sawn. That is where the growth rings
are perpendicular to the surfaces of the board. You would expect little or
no bowing from this. However true quarter sawn is expensive. If I had
12-inch wide quartersawn I would use them in that width. However rarely do
you have wide quartersawn boards. If they are not quartersawn I would cut
them in 4 to 6-inch widths and alternate the grain to even out the bow.
Alternate the grain from board to board. Than I would carve on the heart
side where the majority of the pieces are orientated.

If I were using Bill's camber method they would all be oriented the same and
not alternate the grain. Normally I don't use the camber method because of
the additional set-up time and you need to carve the panel before installing
in the door. After it is carved it would be straight enough to insert into
the stiles and rails of the door.
