The right tool to fit the right arcs will leave the cleanest carvings, I think but I know how expensive they all are. Have you given a thought to burnishing? It sound like an advanced technique but in reality isn't.You use a rounded off dowel of various sizes, different sizes to fit different areas. Make it out of a very hard wood and sand it out to the smoothest finish possible. You simply press and drag the rounded dowel all over various areas of your carving. It will actually leave a slightly shiny very smooth finish on your softer wood carving. After youve done the entire carving, wax and buff it out with a clean shoe brush or cotton finishing cloth. Some of the best carvings i've seen have been finished this way. Saves hours on the sanding and no mess either.
