The things I lean about while woodcarving
A customer recently asked me to carve a DRYAD and I must confess to being
ignorant on the subject so I did a bit of research. This will be very
interesting to those of you who like greenmen, woodspirits and other tree related
mythical beings.
This was sent in reply to the womans request
I love the knowledge i acquire because of woodcarving. While I have been
doing lots of greenmen and woodspirits I had never heard the term Dryad(at first
thought you had mispelled Druid) and it caused me to do some research. As a
woman I am quite happy to learn of this wonderful nymph creature. As for
being 100% irish I am even happier to learn that, although attributed to greek
mythology, it actually emanates from Celtic lore and is one of the lesser
gods that the druids worshiped. I believe each dryad was the spirit of a
particular tree and that she in turn, took part of her personality from the
characteristics of the tree she inhabited. She was bound to her tree and in pure
form was part of the structure of the tree. Although could physically leave it,
she could not ever go far from it. I love the emerging from the tree idea
as it is something I can visualize. Perhaps she is off in search for a lover.
For more info on this creature, do a google search. there is lots of
wonderful info and some great pics out there on the web
