Joe,

In your opinion where does butternut fall in hardness?

It all depends on how hard you drop it LOL
Although the grain is a tat courser it is similar to basswood
In the book called
Carving the Woods  Howard Russell who named hundreds of wood and carved them
all gives butternut the same "A" as basswood
A meaning the soft B Medium and C hard
