Ev, I wish I knew this about 12 years ago when the carbing bug bit.
Not knowing any better, I carved about 25 Woodspirits out of wood
from my wood-stove pile. The majority was Red Oak, the rest was Birch and
Beech.
I didn't think the Red Oak & Birch carved too hard, but the Beech... UGH!
Where does Beech stand on your list?
Haven't found any Basswood or Butternut locally, but we sure do have some
nice Northern White Pine.
