[Woodcarver] How you chose your specialty

Steve,

I belong to the Yorkarvers woodcarving club in PA, and I usually try to
carve something that the other club members didn't get into yet. When I
joined 20+ years ago, it was primarily a bird / duck carving club, so I
carved caricatures, until they got better than me. Then I carved
miniatures, until they got better than me. Then golf balls until they
got better than me. Then miniatures and bottle stoppers until - well,
you get the picture. I am now into relief carving and like it. They
don't appear to want to do this type of carving, so I'm safe for a while.

Here's a free plug for two book authors on the list: I have 3 of Bill
Judt's (including the Revelations CD) and 2 of Lora S. Irish's books all
on relief carving. These two authors have different styles of carving,
but I could not have improved my carving skills to where they are now
without their help.

Thanks for the good topic.

Dave
