Choosing my specialty has been a function of the demand and interest
of the public. I do commissions exclusively. When a customer
expresses interest in a particular subject, I start by proposing my
best vision. After that it's usually a dance of negotiating price
and design until we reach agreement. This process has led me to my
specialty of carving nature and wildlife scenes on doors and mantels.
I don't know if I would have ended up with this specialty if the need
and desire of making at living with my carving had not led me here.
I have had an interest in the human figure for a long time but I
never seem to find the time to pursue it. After putting in 40 to 50
hours a week carving and running a business it's hard to get up the
energy to do more carving.
