[Woodcarver] How you chose your specialty

Hi Steve,

When I first began carving I would often jump around as I was exposed to new
(to me) types of carving. The longer I was involved in woodcarving the more
I was drawn to certain subjects and styles more than others. As a natural
progression I began to focus most of my carving on human faces and figures,
predominantly Native American subjects.

My professional career as a woodcarver dictated that I carve these subjects
almost exclusively because I was better and faster at them than anything
else, and time is money.

However, in order to keep fresh in my woodcarving I would sometimes drift
off and do something completely out of my specialty. More often than not
this would enhance what I normally carved because I would be inspired to add
an element of, for example, relief carving to my normal work.

Now that I don't carve full time I have been experimenting with several
types of carving and subjects. I find that it has enhanced my specialty
quite a bit and added some excitement to my labors.

Good question, interesting subject.

Greg

As the title suggests. How did you chose what type of carving you
specialized in (if you do)? Bill Judt says he concentrates mostly on
relief carving. Second: do you believe you should try to carve many
different styles or should you specialize?

Steve
