Hi Denny
I love the look of cherry when it is freshly worked, but if it is exposed to light too long it takes on a grey tinge and loses its fresh, lively, orange color. It looks dirty and a bit lifeless. This layer is very thin because it can be removed by sanding or re-carving.
You people have perked up my interest in this piece again, I think I might try re-carving that section. I put a coat of sanding sealer over the whole piece, which has preserved the fresh color of the part which is not oxidized.
I will let you know how the re-carving turns out.
