Hi Stephan...

Actually the column orders are referred to as Roman Orders of Architecture. The 5 Orders are: Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, and Composite. What are sometimes referred to as greek orders are the Doric, the Ionic and the Corinthian.

Go to a library.. get a copy of Architectural Graphic Standards.. preferably an old edition - I use edition 5 for older millwork referencing. Pages 674 and 675 illustrate the 5 roman orders of classical columns, and page 676 gives the proportional formulas for entasis and volute.

If you have trouble finding this resource.. Ican copy it and either mail it to you or perhaps scan it (although I would have to reduce the size of the page then etc etc).

Also for a more technical treatise on the subject.. including the theorems of Vitruvius and Euclid try this link:

Denise Andrey and Mirko Galli, "Geometric Methods of the 1500s for Laying Out the Ionic Volute", Nexus Network Journal, vol. 6 no. 2 (Autumn 2004), http://www.nexusjournal.com/AndGal.html

Hope this helps !

Regards,

Peeter Villomann, RA AIA
