Here's how I do it:
Option 1. Have Kim Basinger stand in front of the mirror at the opposite
angle of the camera. Take the photo so only her reflection shows in the
mirror ....
or if Kim isn't available--

Option 2. Substitute a blue-gray sheet of mat board or other flat, smooth
surface
for Kim Basinger, still taking the picture from a slight side angle.
You can easily position yourself so the mat board and not the camera is
reflected in the mirror. If do it so that the camera is only slightly off
to the side, you can get a
fairly straight looking shot with only the neutral blue-gray of the mat
board reflected in the mirror.
