Had some success with that, too. It is, as you say, a bit tricky,
especially when using film. Actually, I prefer a blank mirror that still
looks like a mirror. The reflection of blue-gray mat board does that for
me. You can also hide part of the camera (and yourself) behind the mat
board to get a nearly straight-on shot.
