Bill,
I apologize if I'm butting in here, and butting in late, but I would like to
side strongly with Joe on this issue. It's never a good idea to fluctuate
your prices on a particular item to try and match your market. The customer
you said understood, bought it at a cheaper price earlier, so it's more
likely they are understanding. If they had found you selling the item
cheaper than what they had purchased it for I believe you would have lost a
customer as Joe predicted.
Still, I understand you having a range of venues... for different reasons
probably, I do too. My solution has been to widen the range of products in
my inventory. I carve quick/inexpensive items, intermediate items with
intermediate prices, and high level/ higher priced items. That way if I'm
going to a show in a financially depressed area <like most of the Mohawk
Valley where I live>, I bring all the affordable stuff, most of the middle
stuff and at least one "gee whiz" piece. The "gee whiz" piece is for that
wealthy relative from Boston, who just happed to visiting for the weekend
<G>. I haven't really done a $400-$800/booth "fine arts" show yet, but
when I do, I'll front load my inventory.... all the expensive ribbon winners
would come first, then the middle priced items, and finally the low end
things, but only if I have room left for them <but probably not at all>.
This method means you can tailor yourself for success at any level of show,
but still not compromise yourself, your customers, or, indirectly, other
carvers by fluctuating your prices.
Just MTCW, but it works.
Keep on Carvin'
