Hi Mel,

I haven't used that many digital cameras but my wife is a goldsmith
and belongs to a jewelry mailing list, many of whose members
recommended the Nikon cool pix 4500. We bought that camera and I
have been very happy with it. It's a 4 mega pixel. I wouldn't
recommend anything less. It's not as forgiving as my Olympus digital
for snapshots but has many more creative options. I use it in the
manual high resolution mode to take 300 dpi tiffs. With some
experimentation, a few lights and a tripod you can get great results.
The great thing about digital photography is that you can view the
results immediately and make corrections. You also don't need
special lights because you can correct color distortion with
photoshop.
