Hi Merryl,
You paid $8.52 a board foot for your basswood plus tax. A little pricey but I suspect that it was kiln dried and dressed all sides and that costs. To calculate board feet multiply thickness x width x length in inches and divide by 144. A good Canadian supplier (in Ontario) is A & M in Cambridge. They supply a lot of exotics and veneers and are also a little pricey but a good reference to check going prices for various woods (they charge $6.60 a bd.ft. for kiln dried 4" thick basswood). Their website is at:

Good day carvers,
I just bought a piece of basswood for carving and would like to know what you think of the price. It is a piece 4"x 6" and 14" long, no sides dressed, but kiln dried. The price was $19.60 ( actually paid $22.54 including tax). (BTW, these are Canadian Dollars)
As this is the only source I know of for this type of wood in my province, I was wondering if its a fair price, or could I do much better through mail order?
Cheers,
Merryl Bustin
