[Woodcarver] RE: Woodcarver Digest, Vol 738, Issue 1

I will appreciate any advice ...........
I bought a set of new Stubai tools several years ago from a fellow who
taught at a nearby school but has now moved away. I only recently had one
of the gouges sharpened for the first time and began to use it. After about
30 mins of use, I noticed considerable tearing in the wood and found one
of the wings had several good-sized nicks. I took the tool to my teacher
and had it resharpened on the wheel. He had to take it down about one eighth
of an inch. Back home, I started to use it again and after about five
minutes I had tearing again and, upon inspection ....more nicks - this time
on both wings. I am carving pine - quite soft - no knots. I can't find
anything in the wood that could be damaging the tool. What could the issue
be- could it just be a lemon? poorly tempered or something? Since I cannot
go back to the retailer do I have any recourse?

Another excellent source of carving woods in Ontario is Specialty Lumber in
Colborne. The business has an excellent supply of basswood, pine, butternut
among many others. Trish, Norm and Kathy O'Neill are terrific people to
deal with. Phone number is: 905-355-2988; email is: ospeclbr at eagle.ca.
Tell them Don Swartz from Pennsylvania says "hi".

Merryl,

I have bought basswood and a bit of other carving woods from Tuckaway Lumber
in
Lyme NH, USA. http://www.tuckawaytimber.com/

I know they come to many of the New England shows with a trailer of wood,
and I
have been to their shop in Lyme NH (close to nothing else!!) They are good
folks to deal with and have great wood for sale. I'm just a happy customer,
but
give them a call to see if they ship to NS and what the price might be. If
you
are doing small stuff, he sells smaller pieces of bass/cherry/butternut/etc
at
shows for very cheap money. Tell him what you might want and see if he can
help.

He is very likely to be in attendance at the Maine Woodcarvers show in
October
on columbus day weekend if you have any plans to visit Maine during the
fall.

Best wishes!

Vic Hamburger

Guys,
Thanks for the quick responses and the opinions. I'm satisfied with these
prices, really, because so far the quality has been excellent. The pieces
carve like butter. Sure makes learning fun!
Looking forward to this maillist - sounds like I can learn a lot.
Keep 'em sharp,
Merryl

Hi Merryl;

Contrary to what some others have said I think your price is not too bad.
Just to make you feel even better about "your" price , Lee Valley in
their 2005-06 catalogue (there is a store in Halifax NS), lists a piece of
basswood 4" x 6" x 14" at $34.95 plus tax.

If you do go the mail order route just remember to keep in mind that if
you have to pay CDN taxes plus shipping costs on top it will add up to a
higher board foot cost so the cheaper BFT cost may not be so cheap after
all, it also means you get something that somebody else picked out to ship
to you, in other words not "your" choice.(G).
There is basswood and there is basswood best to be able to see and handle
what you are buying, not to say that you can't get "good' prices and "good"
basswood from mail or telephone order because there "are" excellent mail
order basswood dealers out there, you just have to find them.(G)

I don't have any info on wood dealers on NS but maybe if you check with
Clive Goss who is a carver in NS, Dartmouth I think, he might have a line on
some, here's his web site.
http://www.woodpartners.smugmug.com/.
All in all as I intimated in your situation a base price of about $20.00
for a piece of 4' x 6" x 14" good basswood is not a bad price at all in my
books. (G)
Just my opinion.

Good day carvers,
I just bought a piece of basswood for carving and would like to know
what you think of the price. It is a piece 4"x 6" and 14" long, no sides
dressed, but kiln dried. The price was $19.60 ( actually paid $22.54
including tax). (BTW, these are Canadian Dollars)
As this is the only source I know of for this type of wood in my
province, I was wondering if its a fair price, or could I do much better
through mail order?

Cheers,

Merryl Bustin

Join in on the fun!!!
For informative and fun REAL TIME conversations with a number of the
carvers on "The List", come to the Woodcarver chats. We don't always
talk about carving, but if anyone has a question or comment, we can get
serious in a hurry. Get to know the people behind the names. And bring
you carving questions with you!!!

We meet on Wednesday nights at 9:30 PM Eastern and on Sundays at 4:30
PM Eastern.

If you are NOT using an IRC chat program, I think you will like these
simplified instructions!!! Just click on the link below...will take
you directly to #Woodcarverchat

http://www.starlink-irc.org/java/java_williamslake.html?chan=#Woodcarverchat

This may take a LONG time to load!!!!!!! Don't give up. When it
finally does load, you will be asked to type in a nickname.....then
click connect, and wait a little bit longer. The chat screen will
open. Type something in the narrow horizontal space just below the
chat screen and hit you enter key. Nothing to it! :)

*******

If you are using an mIRC chat program:
1. Log onto your ISP.
2. Open mIRC. You should see a box "mIRC Options". If you don't
then click on View then on "Options" Fill in the information
there...you do NOT have to put in your real name or email
address. For security purposes, make them up. Do put in the
nickname you want and an alternative.
4. Click on the button with the sunburst icon, just to the right
of the button that says, "Connect to Server". Where it says "IRC
Network", scroll down until you see "Starlink-IRC" and highlight that
so it shows in the window. There is also a Starlink network, so make
sure that the one you select has the "IRC" after it. Now click on the
arrow next to the IRC server window. That will list a number of
Starlink-IRC servers....select one of them. The Starlink-IRC random
server will automatically pick one of the servers for you, so you can
use that one. With one of the Starlink-IRC servers in the window, click on
"Connect to Server"

If the Starlink Random Server is not in your mirc program you can add it:
Click the "add" button.
Where it says "Description" type "Starlink Random Server"
Where it says "IRC Server" type IRC.STARLINK-IRC.ORG
Port should be 6664,6665,6666,6667,6668,6669 (all of those with no
spaces between them)
and "Group" is Starlink-IRC
5. Once connected, you'll see lots of scrolling text. When that
stops, type
/join #Woodcarverchat in the window at the bottom and hit
your "enter" key.
(you need the / and #, and Woodcarverchat must be spelled exactly
right)

See you there!

Good Morning;

First Post

In Nova Scotia, I find the best source for Basswood is East Coast Specialty
Hardwood in Dartmouth. However, judging by your description and the price
that you paid; this is likely where you purchased it.

Right on both counts, Steven.
Wonderful place, though, if you like wood!
Have a great day.
