I am carving pine - quite soft - no knots. I can't find
anything in the wood that could be damaging the tool. What could the issue
be- could it just be a lemon? poorly tempered or something? Since I cannot
go back to the retailer do I have any recourse?

You can retemper the tool yourself. the info is available on the net if you
search. this invoves using a small blowtorch and water for the quenching.
you dont need a big welding setup to do it. they sell small handheld
cannister torches. I forgot the the time ratio for the quenching. I believe it is
30 seconds for every 1/4" of blade but find out the correct info before you
do it. a tool manufacturer near you may be able to do it. it will have to be
reground, sharpened and honed again when you are finished but please don't
throw your tool away. you can also contact chris whillock of the famed
carving whillock family to see if stubai will stand by their tool. I believe that
they will.
