Gentle Subscribers:
I finally finished the farewell carving for my second son. He leaves
home in June to assume duties in the Canadian Forces as a junior
officer. Having just finished he training as an Electrical/Mechanical
Engineer (EME) with a degree in Civil Engineering, he now owes
Canadian Forces five years of service. The truth be known, I think he
is a career soldier.
He ships off to CFB Borden, in Ontario in June, to complete the last
phase of his officer's training. We won't see him for 9 months. Soon
after, he will receive his first domestic posting.
I chose Psalm 144 for him, seeing that this is called the Warrior's
Psalm. In fact, this Psalm was written by King David, who, as anyone
familiar with scriptures will know, was not only the king of Israel,
but a mighty warrior. As a youth he killed wild animals while
defending sheep. Later he slew the giant Goliath of the Philistines.
Later he was forced to live the life of a fugitive and a guerilla
warrior while King Saul sought his life. Finally, he ascended to the
throne and led Israel as King and Commander of all its armies,
actively fighting into middle age.
With this in mind, the Psalm is written for the warrior by a warrior.
It has the ring of truth, having been borne of experience, and has
served to underpin the courage and commitment of soldiers for
thousands of years.
