I heard of a product called "Nu-Lustre 55" that can be used to cover bar tops, tables, etc. It leaves a hard transparent surface. I found it while looking for something to fill in a relief carving on a table top that I still wanted to use as a table.
While looking into it further, the most common FAQ was about it running, looking rough & not setting up properly. The answer the manufacturer always gave to these questions was that it wasn't mixed enough.
