You'll find a lot of hype when it comes to some brands of woodburners. I did some research a few years ago. I'm an electronic engineer that deals with temperature measurements. Here's the results.

1. Power ratings such as 100 watt models, 130 watt models, are hype. The maximum power usage is somewhere between 30 and 40 watts.

2. Metal transfers heat faster, aluminum among the fastest.

3. Using at 2000° tip temperature will burn out a tip (this has been hyped)

4. One unit has the cord attached to the burning pen. Most the pens can be changed without the need to deal with a bunch of cord.

5. One unit uses a 1/4" phone plug. This type of plug has a pretty small contact area, but looks big and hurky. The smaller, RCA type connector has a lot more contact area.

Two brands that I would recommend are Colewood and Optima.

My wife has promised me a woodburning unit for my birthday. Any suggestions on what I should ask her for? I have been looking at the Colwood detailer from Smoky Mountain and the Mastercarver Burnmaster from Wood Carvers Supply. Sine we are several hundred miles from the nearest outlet, it will be necessary to order by mail with no chance to inspect the unit or try it out.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
