Michael,

The answer to every question is, "It depends!" Seriously, in this case, it
depends what kind of wood do you plan to work with? Different species are more
common in one area than another part of the continent. Basswood grows in the
northern part of the US and southern CA, while other species cover different
areas and therefore are more likely to show up at specialty lumberyards or
sawmills.

If you are unsure what specie of wood to start with, reply back to this list and
we can help you find a wood that suits your tools, experience, and needs.

If you think you will need to mailorder wood, go to: http://www.woodfinder.com/
There are a number of mail/internet order lumber suppliers listed there. You
may also find a supplier close by who can fill your needs.

Go to http://carverscompanion.com/ and look into the "resources files" for a lot
of valuable tips and answers to questions. These files are a brain dump of many
talented carvers that should help you out.

Lastly, welcome to the list and feel free to ask questions, there are plenty of
folks here ready to help!
