Hey Jim,
If you have a "Harbor Frieght" store around. Take a look at their heavy canvas bag. It has 16 pockets on the out side. Which are great for knives & palm tools.Behind these pockets are eight larger pockets and the open middle of the bag ( which you carry like a gym bag ) is where you can really load it down. 
Depends on which sale you catch. They'll run from $20 as low as $5.
