[Woodcarver] Augers and long drills

Hi Ray,
These augers are still available in tool catalogs. I bought one about10
years ago for installing poles in carousel horses. It's 1-1/2 inch diameter
and 16-inches long. I have extensions to take it out to 4-feet long.
I can only imagine the workout one would get from hand cranking that auger
through a timber. Even with power there's a lot of torque and makes your
arms tired.
What I would be interested in getting is the type of augers they drilled
wooden water pipe. I'm told that they were smooth on the outside and hallow
like a pipe with about ¼ of the side opened up. The drilling end was shaped
like a spoon gouge with no sharp point. If anyone has an auger like this or
knows someone who does I would very much like to buy it.
I still think the best way to dry logs is to drill through the heart and
blow dry air though it.

For all you "tool nuts" out there, once upon a time I was a bridge and
trestle carpenter. We used a four foot long auger to drill holes in wooden
bridge and trestle timbers by hand (no electric out in the boonies in those
days). Point being that there probably are some of those old augers around
if anyone cared to look for them. Incidently, in the Pacific Northwest the
Indian Totem poles are carved out in the back. The bulk of the heartwood is
removed.
I appreciate Lori"s sense of humor. Regards, Ray Mighells 6760 Rt 417
