[Woodcarver] aching palm

Many years ago I had an injured hand from a fall. My instructor at the time taught me to hold my chisels and gouges with the end in the web of my hand (between thumb and finger). I still carve that way today and can spend many hours with no hand problems. Of course, as mentioned earlier by another list member, use the mallet for most "hard to push" cuts - it is more accurate and less stressful on the body.

Hi to all,

doing some real deep relief in mahogany, using hand chisels only. Spent endless hours today and yesterday. Last night after I put the tools down the palm of my hand was extremely tender due to the butt of many chisels being pressed into it for so long. Today I began carving and almost immediately, my palm was as sore as ever. What I wound up doing was taking a piece of duct tape and folding it over on itself again and again till I had about 8 layers, sticky side out. Stuck it to my palm and put a glove over it. Carved for about 6 hours after that with no problem. What does everyone else use to prevent painful palm syndrome?

Get a small mallet. It works for me.
