Steve,

     Yup, where you can get the water TO the glue. Problem is that
once everything's clamped up and cured only a thin edge is exposed
and most of it can't be reached.

     With the hide glue it's just heat that does the trick and you can

warm the entire piece. It doesn't need to get anywhere NEAR warm
enough to harm the wood while to get the water to all the glue you'd
have to SATURATE the entire piece.

Hi Tom,
    It might matter which Elmer's you use.  The white glue gets soft
with water and will melt.

Alex,

     I'll let others tell you more about HOW to use it and just say
that hide glue will come apart fairly easily by using a heat gun 
like a super hair dryer. OH, and I didn't mean you shouldn't do it
the way you planned, only that you KNOW you couldn't take it
apart if you wanted to. Elmer's and Titebond, when cured, are
actually HARDER than the wood itself and aren't softened or much
affected by anything.

Relative to the glue, Tom said " If you use Elmer's or titebond you
won't be easily able to undo what you've done if it comes out wrong.
Hide Glue will
permit, the others won't."  Ivan also mentioned hide glue for the same
reason.  OK, although I see no reason why one would want to undo the
repair work done, maybe I can give the hide glue a shot but please
advise on:
How does one "undo" a hide glue repair job?
Any tips on using the hide glue?
