[Woodcarver] warping wood

Did she paint the board that was chip carved? If so she needed to paint
both sides. I have carved those serving trays where the bottom slides out
and have had that happen. With one of them I used a damp cloth over the
board and placed a paint can on top for a day. It did flatten out.

My wife, Bev, has chipped carved the bottom of a basswood serving tray,
about 12" x 24" x 3/8". As expected, the bottom curved towards the
carving side, but much more than I thought it would. The 4 sides have
dados where the bottom would fit into, but the bottom is warped so much,
that it will not go together.

What is the best method of undoing the warping? The preferred finishing
is to spray it several times with satin Deft, then using a gel stain
fill in the chipped carving areas.

Would it straighten out if she applied the Deft? How about spraying it
with water?
