I think the best finish would depend on what you plan to do with the board. 
The fact that the board is smooth, almost like a mirror finish already does 
not mean any type of finish would work on it.  If it is that smooth and will 
not be subject to a lot of wear, perhaps somethink like a hand-rubbed tung 
oil finish or maybe a gun stock finish would be preferable to a heavy, 
coating-type finish.
