I had the same problem with the bark flaking off, especially around the rocks. This is how I handled that problem. I rough carved to the point where I felt the wood was in danger of chipping off, then I would apply a drop or two of krazy glue. After the glue dried I would carve or sand to the final stage, then I would apply another coat of krazy glue to make sure that the section would not chip off. Once the glue dried that section was done and I knew that there was no danger of chipping. If you take a close look you will notice some areas are darker than others, that is due to the krazy glue. The krazy glue naturally darkens the wood and the lighter areas are plain polyurethane. That is how I got the dark areas between the bricks. I would carved and sand the surface smooth then applied a coat of poly. Then I carved the bricks and applied krazy glue in the "grout" lines. The brick surface stayed light because of the poly and the grout darkened because of the glue.

Hi John!
   Thank you for posting this one!  This is the one I remember.  You have 
done an excellent job!
   Now then,  I remember you telling me you did something special to it as 
you carved and I think it helped prevent it from chipping out as you worked 
- I think- but I can't remember now.  2 of our carvers are really into the 
bark and were complaining of having to change the design because of it 
flaking off so much.  Can you tell me again what it was you did so I can 
share it with them?  Thanks for the info.  And your house looks terrific!
