Maura,
No problem (helping you make a flute), but I would stall him for a bit until
I can help you build one or two of your own first.
Then you can bring them to the NEWR, and I can help you with any technical
sound problems (if you have any). Trust me, regardless of whether it's
perfect or not, you're going to want to hold on to your "first one".
OK, "verbal crash course".. Well, how about the questions I ask when some
one wants a flute made "from scratch"?
1) What "voice" are they looking for. high (piccolo/ Irish flute),
middle (recorder/classical flute), or low (alto flute). They don't need to
give you the exact key (unless they know it), just a general idea. I can
help you from there.
2) Do they have any idea what species of wood they would prefer. here
again, it can be a general idea like. light wood/dark wood?.
brownish/reddish/yellowish/cream?... a pronounced grain, figured grain, or
subtle grain?
3) They don't need any musical experience, but if they have an idea of
their "finger reach", it would help. This is especially a factor with the
lower voiced flutes.
4) Do they have a theme in mind, like a flower, animal, pteroglyph, or
other N.A. symbol they want included. Most of the time this is what you
carve into the totem or "bird" of the flute, other times you can burn and/or
paint it into the sides of the flute, sometimes both. Like with Ol' Don's
flute I carved the "bird" into an eagle's head and then burned a single
eagle feather into each side of the flute's foot. My first flute was a
dragon totem, with Celtic knots burned down the sides, and my second was a
walking bear totem with bear tracks burned down both sides.
5) Do they expect a flute bag with it? I can help you with that too.
Obviously, you don't want to give them a price until you get these answered
(and bring 'em back to me). If they push you hard for a price, walk away
from it (if possible) and make yourself one anyway. If need to tell them
something, tell them $300 for the flute, $50 for the bag, and four months
time to complete (+ whatever time you need for other projects already in the
queue).
How's that for "crash" <G>?
Keep on Carvin'

Subject: Re: [Woodcarver]-atten Mike Bloomquist
.anyway Mike, I may need your help shortly. Some guy called one of my
carving buddies about wanting a flute made. He asked if there was anyone on
staten island capable of making one and of course he said that I could do
it. Everyone always has more confidence in me than I do myself. Of course
I've never made one. Okay so my thinking is that if he doesn't want
something fancy than I will tackle the project and learn as I go but if he
wants a really nice flute or a native amer. flute then I will refer him to
you. He is supposed to come to our club friday morning. Can you give me a
verbal crash course on the major issues to be concerned with so that I don't
sound like a moron when talking to him. I have a well equipped shop which
I'm sure can handle it. I will also do independant research on the net to
help with my learning curve. Thanks
