I got back to work on a bear head that I had started over a year ago. It
was done in an 8" - 9" diameter section of cottonwood log from a long dead
tree. Although I was going to use part of the log for the base, I wound up
making a bear mask that hangs on the wall out of it (the little bit of log
part on the button was ugly and the location of the carving screw prevented
me from doing a base design that I would like). I finished the carving,
stained it with an analine dye and then did a monochromatic finish (except
for the black around nose and mouth and a touch of color in the eyes) with a
mixture of burnt umber and burnt sienna. I sort of like it. I just
finished painting it this morning. After it dries and I apply a finish I
will take some photos of the finished piece and post them on my picturetrail
site.
