The one's I heard should not be repeated in mixed company.  The reasoning
was that the government of the state resides in lower Michigan and the
people of the UP felt like they were not considered in the decisions.  The
sparse population compared to the thumb made for limited voting power.

 Most of the carving clubs I have heard of are from the thumb as well.  I
only know of one in Iron Mountain in the UP.
