Hi Annie,

Welcome to the list for you as well! See my reply to Kathy in my
previous message about suppliers, websites to visit, etc.

Maine is blessed with a strong woodcarving organization with a number of
local chapters. here: http://mainewoodcarvers.org/
They have an annual show each fall, the last was Columbus day weekend in
Augusta at the Armory. You will want to visit next year and see the
wonderful displays.

I am a member there, although live in Massachusetts. I have a 3 season
place we use up on the mid-coast area and am friends with a number of
the folks in the Maine group.

The pattern you are looking at is done with a chip carving knive. This
is different than a typical carving blade in that it is angled down from
your wrist as you hold it. You can see pictures of them in the catalogs
or on line. They are priced less than $30 and one knife, plus a strop
will get you carving in no time. Chip carving requires lots of
practice, but thin basswood in 3" x 24" pieces is readily available in
craft stores, some hardware stores, and hobby shops.

There is one supplier who specializes in chip carving, here:
http://www.chippingaway.com/

The Moor's have a wide ranging catalog with excellent products, and
while they are in canada, they have no problem shipping to the US.
Closer to home to you is Wayne Edmondson's company, MDI
at:http://www.mdiwoodcarvers.com/Default.aspx

Wayne is internet and show only sales as I understand it, but is another
knowledgeable carver/supplier that you will enjoy meeting and doing
business with.

OK, again, more than you needed to know perhaps!! LOL!! Welcome to the list!

Vic H
