Bill,
Had a great time, but almost immediately wished I'd signed up for both days.
I did manage to attend a lecture with my friend Pete Ortel. Yvonne and I
caught up on gossip and family news with him and his wife Madeleine. I got
to the Lori Corbett (of DIY fame <G>) lecture early for a good seat, and was
able to meet her in-the-flesh... definitely one of my Open House high
points. She was nervous about doing her first ever lecture of this type.
IMHO, after attending it, she had no reason to be nervous. I've never
carved decoys (antique or otherwise), but I had reviewed his book so I
caught Tom Matus's lecture on painting techniques as well. Very glad I did,
and it was his last of the day, so we got to chat for a while afterwards.
Saw Dennis Moore again briefly, but was only able to sit in a piece of one
of his chip carving classes. Because of the one day limit I only managed a
brief stop at Chris Lubkemann's (whittling) and Ev Ellenwood's demo areas
(bought his sharpening DVD). Wish I could have met them personally, but
they were doing some great teaching with no foreseeable pause in the action,
so I just watched their techniques and learned.
Fox/Chapel had this open house much better set up than past ones. Parking
was spread out to several close lots, and the classes were also spread out
to two local churches besides their warehouse offices. There was plenty of
room in all classes and the display areas outside of the classes as well.
One of the churches was selling food from the basement kitchen. Lots of
vendors of tools, great scratch-and-dent sale, tons of friends and friendly
faces from the Honesdale NEWR... the day went by way too fast.
Keep on Carvin'
