[Woodcarver] inserting fins

Maura:

There are many ways to insert fins. If the fish is to be a natural finish
fish you should start with an insertion hole slightly smaller that the fin
you will be inserting. Carve a slight wedge on the fin and use a soft lead
pencil on the portion of the fin you will be inserting and insert the fin
into the hole. As you insert the fin it will leave a black mark on the
fish. Just carve the black mark away until the fin insertion is complete.
If you are painting your fish, I like to use auto Bondo for the insertion.
Bondo carve well and takes paint well.

Maura, you might want to check out the HYPERLINK

a lot of discussion on fish carving there and the folks are good at
answering questions.

Good luck with your carving.

Subject: [Woodcarver] inserting fins

Hi all, I will be doing a medium sized 2 ft fish project shortly and am
assuming that i will need to insert fins to keep the grain running in the
right direction. Would someone please advise me on the correct way to do
this. Thanks in advance
