[Woodcarver] WOOD CARVER FROM INDIA

The various pieces that Sarfaraz had on his old website were
what are properly considered patterns from the "public
domain"...Traditional architectural designs that come in so many
variations and have been around so long that no one can claim
ownership of a design. ( I have a set of catalogs for plaster
castings that has some 14,000 designs in it, all from 18th and 19th
century original molds )...Sarfaraz was trying to show that he can do
a wide range of designs, but he has very limited resources and little
inventory on hand to show his own work..( remember, everything he has
done has been for someone else who has taken each completed
piece. Sarfaraz does not have many examples of his finished work,
nor has he had easy access to a camera with which to try and take
pictures of such work.)

A pattern on paper can be copyrighted, but as soon as it moves
from paper to wood or plaster or resin it no longer is. It would be
a matter of concern to me if someone co opted an original artistic
design like a character figure or a sculpture or a relief, and
claimed it for their own, but traditional historical ornament and
embellishment really need to stand on the quality of the work more
than on the design. Perhaps I would complain more if a special design
of mine were being somehow mass produced by a big company in China (
I still don't know if I could do much about it...maybe I could fight
for royalties of some sort if I could afford enough lawyers), but if
someone who actually can do good work says he can do something like
what I do, and is doing it by hand, and isn't signing my name to
it, then I figure there's probably enough potential clients in the
world for both of us to have something to do most of the time. As has
been often said, "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". And
stylistically it is still his work, not mine: It will be
different. Also, I would hope that I am creative enough to stay
ahead of the competition with new market-worthy ideas.

Stephan
