... the legend goes that the Cod has a thumbprint on one side and the print 
of the first two fingers on the other side.
This is supposed to mean that the Cod was the fish that Jesus used to feed 
the multitude.
Thus the "sacred".

and... the story goes on... the Devil tried to get into the act but couldn't 
hold onto the Cod.
The fish wiggled out of the Devil's hand but not before it burned a stripe 
down each
side of the fish. This fish is now known as a Haddock.
