[Woodcarver] Bird painting

Hello folks,
I'm painting up a tree swallow. Any hints on how to get that blue/black iridescence? Should I try a black base with a blue wash, or vice versa?  I'm using Ceramcoat acrylics and the bird is in eastern white pine.  Any help would be great.
