The number after his signature denoted how many NINA's were in the drawing

Good thing too, Tom, since that's your name. Wouldn't do to have it say, "carved by Ben Franklin" or somebody else. . . . . .sorry, bad joke. I'm only on my first cup of coffee.
Al Hirschfeld "hid" his daughter's name in his drawings by incorporating her name in the sketch somewhere, making it a game for his fans to search for her name. Since a conventional signature might be obtrusive, I think it would be interesting for a bird carver to come up with a "signature" that could be incorporated into the feathering that could be put in an inconspicuous place, but found by someone who knew what they were looking for--as a kind of proof of authorship--on the carving itself.
As I said, I'm only on my first cup of coffee.
