Perhaps it is time we took our art form into the general public. I belong to a number of business associations and local chambers of commerce. When I mention our carving club and the fact that we do demonstrations I get some genuine interest.

A few months ago we were featured at a local garden and wild bird shop. They had an open house complete with visiting raptors from the local wildlife sanctuary. We were able to put work up for sale, demonstrate our work, promote our yearly show, and the whole thing was free. In addition we were featured in the local paper. Great promotion all around and everyone had a great time!

The woodcarving arts are interesting and different. I have more leads than I can follow right now on the local level as far as getting us out to demonstrate.

Resurrecting the art form may require a proactive approach with local businesses and nature/wildlife organizations. They get people to learn about their establishment by offering them an experience with woodcarving - we get to promote our art usually without any cost involved. Both of us get exposure in the press via releases and pictures (which you should supply).

In my previous businesses I've done lots of networking to promote my products and services, many organizations do this too. Woodcarving can use this vehicle also.

Word to the wise - if you do this have a newsletter people can subscribe to. It is extremely important to maintain a database of interested individuals and organizations. They may not contact you now but if you keep in touch you may find a great opportunity down the road 1, 2, or 3 years down the line. Always have a list out for more info or events either e-mail snail mail or both.

Just an idea :)
