Thanks again for the input on the router questions. Actually, I will use the router for woodwork such as dados and decorative edges in addition to occasional relief carvings so I have decided to opt for a 15 amp unit. It should also be more stable for deeper plunges in thick relief carvings with hard wood. I do have an old commercial Craftsman fixed base router that is about worn out but still useful for light work that I will keep set up on my router table.
Models I am now looking at are:
Bosch 1619EVS (seems to have the best reviews)
Dewalt DW625
Makita 3612C or 3612CX1 (see question below)
Porter Cable 7539 (Reviews did not like this one for any hand work - too heavy, no feel)
Bill J - I am wondering what model number Makita you use (thought I wrote it down but could not find it. The reason I ask is that I have seen reviews on the 3612C which complain about the bits insertion and removal being difficult and, more of a concern, complaints about side to side movement when plunging. As I understand it the model CX1 is the same as the model C except that it is package differently and costs a little bit less. There were lots of very good reviews but the few bad ones concern me.
I am thinking that I will get one of the top three above but am open to any final input anyone cares to make.
I also like a couple of the 2 1/4 HP, 12 AMP plunge/fixed base combo units but something in me does not carve for the idea of putting the power unit in different bases - just seems inherently less solid and less accurate.
