Sally:
I don't know about scanners... I rarely use one anymore.
But perhaps you can use your digital camera to do the "scanning".
Whenever I have a pattern or carving photo to "scan" I avoid my
scanner in favor of my 6 MP Canon XT digital camera. It has a
resolution many times that of the scanner. Add to this the capability
of editing and otherwise enhancing the images in a photo program, and
the scanner seems like such a waste of time and effort.
Scanner manufacturers are notorious for NOT providing the proper
drivers for Mac computers. Even for my basic scanner (a Canon Lide),
I had to purchase third party scanner driver software to get it to
work right. The application is "VueScan", by Hamrick software
(www.hamrick.com/vuescan/vuescan.htm).
BTW, two Apple programs are especially suited for image editing:
iPhoto... capable but limited... and Aperture... much more suited for
workflow, and more capable for image editing.
Caveat: Always use a tripod for picture taking of this type. And use
natural light, if you can. otherwise, use the white balance in your
imaging software to correct for color. Edge-sharpening if useful too.
Let me know if this is helpful, OK?
