[Woodcarver] Gunstock carving question

Hi all,  I am wondering if a gunstock carver or two will pop their  heads up 
and answer a question for me.  I now have excellent book w/  patterns to guide 
my first gunstock carving attempt, just rec'd a walnut  gunstock.  Now my 
problem is the tools.  Do you advise buying  checkering tools or can I make do 
with regular carving gouges and chisels and  rotary tools.   any other tricks of 
the trade would be most  welcome.  Thanks
