Lori,
If your video camera is digital (writes to memory or a small CD) you're half
way there. In the owner's manual there should be instructions for
downloading your videos to the computer, probably in mpeg format. There are
several formats and I found a decent tutorial at...
http://www.mediacollege.com/video/streaming/formats/
It's not the final answer but you can use the discussion there to expand
your research in the right directions.
If your camera is analog then you'll need an interface card and supporting
software for your computer to accept the signal from your camera (in
playback mode) and convert it to a digital format. The interface card will
need to be installed into your computer. The one I've heard of most often is
FireWire, but there are others. FireWire software also includes tools for
editing your video once it is in digital format. At this point you might
weigh the cost of the conversion hardware/software against the price of a
digital video camera that won't need it (you will still need the editing
software).
No matter what solution, you'll need lots of memory and a fast processor on
the computer. If you computer is a little slow processing jpeg pictures, it
will be glacial operating on video (and the audio with it).
Good Luck
Keep on Carvin'
