My question is, do I begin the process at
the deepest or the shallowest part of the carving. I realize it is
probably a matter of personal preference, but your experience would most
probably save me some grief.
Thank you for your site and the great information and education I am
able to glean from it.

Hi Larry, Thanks for the compliments on my website. I have been painting
for many years now, but as in any artform there is freedom. there is no wrong
way to do something as long as it comes out the way you want it to. It is
all trial and error in the beggining till you know what works for you. My
method of painting is to work from the lightest color to the darkest, then to
paint in the smaller details, then to apply an antiqueing solution to make it
look "not so new" then to put a perservative such as satin spar varnish or
satin polyurethane over it all. I will work with thinned out paints and apply
as many layers as needed till I reach the color coverage I desire. Sometimes
if you use a full strength paint, it will come out looking like a plastic
reproduction. I try to stop when I have the color I want but it is at the
point where you can still see the grain through it. I want whoever piicks it up
to be able to tell that it is a woodcarving.
feel free to ask anything you may not understand. I like to help as it is a
way to pay back all those who helped me in the beginning. Thanks again and
let me know how it goes.
