Great work, Steve. I've done a little of the scrimchaw and it is difficult. You have a nice uncluttered look to your designs that is most attractive.
Do you use power for carving the ivory?

Hi there Bev....
I am in Alaska as well. Southeast in the
Ketchikan area, on Annette Island. I do a wide range of things, mostly
scrimshaw and gunstocks. The later are my specialty.
Check out my site as well to see the gunstocks
that I have done.
Best Regards,
Steve

Denny -
Thanks so much for the response.
I would love to become involved in the Veteran's Memorial Cane Project -
how do I do that?
I carve canes and I'm working on learning to do gun stocks.
I'm in Alaska right now - will be here until October. Diamond
Willow country. I bought some, but we're getting a little saw and
heading out to the woods to collect more.
Thanks again!

Bev,
I changed the subject line to reflect what
you are actually discussing in the email.
I make canes for the
Veteran’s Memorial Cane Project. The toppers are all the same, but the
shanks are all quite different. I also make them for clients as well.
I am presently working on one with a House Sparrow topper, one with a
Giraffe topper & one with a Leopard topper. I also make cups with
relief carvings on them. I am finishing up one with a fly fisherman
& a trout, one with 2 wolves on it, one with 2 hawks, one with praying
hands on one side and Jesus on the cross on the other, & one with a 10
point Whitetail buck on one side and the “going away” view of the white
tail on the other. I also have a commission to do one with a Bull on one
side and a Bear on the other for a stock broker. I have started a few
fish, but they don’t get it for me and I have yet to do a gunstock.
So you see, there are carvers that do other stuff than
Santa’s, but we must be the quiet ones.
