Thank you all for the kind words regarding my Noah's Ark. This is the first
time I have had the temerity to post something and I did so with some
trepidation. I was delighted to get such positive feedback.
David from Newcastle asked about the plans. I got them from Furniture
Plans. com. This is the address: _http://www.furnitureplans.com/_
(http://www.furnitureplans.com/) As I recall they charged me about $10 to download them.
I only used the plans for the hull. The Ark is designed to be made from 1 by
6 by 96 inch pine boards. (This only works if you get perfect boards with no
knots.) However, I used 1/4 inch fir plywood for the deck and roof and half
inch poplar for the cabin. It doesn't show on the photo, but I woodburned planks
on the deck and cabin and shingles on the roof. I hinged the roof so the
girls could take the animals in and out and I added a ramp cut from a piece of 2
inch by 6 inch pine. The deck lifts off so all the animals and the ramp can be
stored inside the hull when it is not in use. Length is 22 inches, beam about
8 inches and overall height about 9 inches.
Their plans call for stylized animals to be cut out from the pine scraps
remaining after the hull is constructed but instead I carved and woodburned
them from basswood and cedar. I stained the hull with Waatco Danish oils (walnut
and fruitwood), the deck and roof with fruitwood, and the cabin with Golden
Oak and then applied several coats of sem-gloss polyurethane. I plan to send
the girls additional pairs of animals from time to time.
Let me know if you need any more details.
