[Woodcarver] Mantel

Hi Dave,

Typical dimensions are 4 to 5 inches thick by and 6 to 10 inch wide shelf by 6 to 8 feet long.

My advice would be to allow the wood to dry before carving and installing it. Typically it takes 1 year for every inch thickness. A 5-inch thick mantel is 5 years of drying time.

If you need it sooner, I suggest that you have it sawn thinner and after drying glue up the thickness that you need.

I'm looking for advice:

Our Church Camp is building a Retreat Center this fall and a 10' wide fireplace is being planned for the Great Room. I am currently clearing trees from the site and am planning to cut a mantel from one of the oak trees.
What kind of dimensions should I use in cutting this mantel? I plan to do deep relief carving in it.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Blessed to be a Blessing,
