Hi Tom,

The mantel needs to be scaled to fit the fireplace and the room that its
in. It may extend beyond the fireplace or be shorter or even wrap around
with returns to the wall. There is no standard. You just choose which looks
best.

I generally have my customers send me a photo of their fireplace and I
digitally install different size mantels, different length mantels and
different color mantels. Then I email the photos back to the customer so
they can choose which option they prefer.

Joe,

If it's a 10 foot fireplace how does a 6-8 foot mantle work??
Mebbe I just don't understand but I always thought the mantle
should extend beyond the fireplace.....

Tom (nj) ;--)

or is that just an example and should be scaled up to fit ???

Hi Dave,

Typical dimensions are 4 to 5 inches thick by and 6 to 10 inch wide
shelf by 6 to 8 feet long.

My advice would be to allow the wood to dry before carving and
installing it. Typically it takes 1 year for every inch thickness. A 5-inch
thick mantel is 5 years of drying time.

If you need it sooner, I suggest that you have it sawn thinner and
after drying glue up the thickness that you need.

I'm looking for advice:

Our Church Camp is building a Retreat Center this fall and a 10'
wide fireplace is being planned for the Great Room. I am currently clearing
trees from the site and am planning to cut a mantel from one of the oak
trees.
What kind of dimensions should I use in cutting this mantel? I
plan to do deep relief carving in it.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Blessed to be a Blessing,
